Educational and Vocational Program

The Educational and Vocational branch of the LABBB program includes a total of thirteen classrooms from Middle school to High school. It is our belief that creating a dynamic social environment, a strong educational curriculum and a myriad of Vocational experiences in our community business, will enable student’s to reach their full potential.

Recreational Programs: One of the most appealing features of LABBB is the recreational opportunities that we offer to all of our students. These opportunities allow for students to enhance their social life outside of school. We also are able to carry over some basic life skills, such as using money appropriately and proper hygiene, and social skills during these activities. We offer a number of activities throughout the school year. Fees for our recreational programming vary depending upon the activity. There are some scholarships available to families in need.

• After school programming

Our after school programming consists of two sessions during the school year. Session one begins in the fall and typically lasts 8 to 10 weeks. Session two begins in early spring and also lasts 8 to 10 weeks. All after school activities are supervised by experienced LABBB staff.

As part of after school programming, we offer bowling on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students are transported via a bus from school to the bowling alley, and enjoy bowling and dinner with their peers.

On Wednesdays, we offer a variety of activities that take place on the Lexington High School campus. Students sign up for an activity that will last 8 to 10 weeks. Some of the activities we have offered in the past have included: karaoke/dance, yoga, card playing, arts and crafts, scrap booking, walking, yearbook, and spa.

• Field trips

Throughout the year, LABBB offers students a chance to participate in a number of after school field trips. All field trips are supervised by experienced LABBB staff. Field trips are typically organized so that similar classrooms participate at the same time, which gives the students a chance to experience time with their peers outside the classroom. Past field trips have included: apple picking, pumpkin picking, movie and mall trips, trips to sporting events, and trips to local fairs.

• Dances

Throughout the year, LABBB hosts a number of dances at local venues, such as different schools, churches, and halls. All dances are supervised by experienced LABBB staff. The dances are open to any student who is currently enrolled at LABBB. Dances give students a chance to hang out with their peers on a Thursday or Friday night and have fun. Some of the dances have themes, such as the Halloween Dance. We also host two "formal dances." In the fall is the Reunion Dance – this dance allows students, past and present, a chance to get dressed up and enjoy a night out. In June, we host the Graduation Dinner/ Dance. This is a night where friends and family of LABBB graduates come together to celebrate our students' great achievement.

• Overnight trips

One of LABBB's more unique features is its ability to offer students the opportunity to go away overnight. Students have the chance to experience people, places, and activities they might otherwise never get the chance to experience. All trips are supervised by experienced LABBB staff, who take care to carry over the teaching of basic life skills, such as helping use money appropriately, ordering food, personal hygiene, etc.

Best Buddies: The Best Buddies program within our schools has been a significant part of enhancing our student's social needs and integrate within the school community. Students with disabilities have not had the opportunity to develop relationships outside of their own special education classroom. Our peer buddies have opened doors for many of our students and this program continues to grow within each school environment.

Overview

This Program provides academic and pre-vocational services for multi-handicapped to moderate specials needs. The students are assigned to a substantially separate classroom within a public middle school. Depending on their needs and strengths, students participate in small group instructional activities, community based recreational and educational events as well as pre-vocational opportunities.

Using group processes, techniques and behavior management strategies, teachers, teacher assistants, and counselors collaborate in providing intensive instruction in basic academic subjects in both special and regular education settings. Building on successful experiences within mainstream classes, staff are able to meet the overall program goals of assisting students in acquiring academic and social skills, and is becoming successful learners.
